The dark blue cladding made of high-strength GRP sandwich material contrasts elegantly with the white of the X emblem, the front grit and the substructure supporting the funnel, whose technical character is visually eclipsed by the bands running horizontally around it.

The weight reduction of the chimney cladding with the exhaust spoiler, which was also made of aluminum in the fiber composite version, is approx. 47% compared to a completely aluminum version of the funnel. If you only look at the substituted cladding panels and X symbols, the reduction is even around 60%.

The whirlpool tower with tiled shower recess was also manufactured in a sandwich construction and can therefore carry a multiple person load even without ribs. Due to the stiff material, the deflections of tiled areas are so small that there is no risk of joint cracks forming.

The white, lightweight shells guide the gaze of the passengers in the outside cabins above away from the technology of the davits and towards the open sea. Due to the rigid sandwich construction, a ribless and smooth shape was possible. The CAD-supported design and CNC production also simplified the individual adaptation of the individual panels to sloping and curved edge cuts as well as to the tolerances of the shipyard steel construction. The panels are glued to the steel substructure exclusively with a high-performance adhesive.

The advantageous design options with fiber-reinforced plastics are also illustrated by two constructs that were assembled in the open leisure and sports area of both ships.

The so-called Viking pipes lead harmoniously in a double curved arc from the bulwark of a deck to the deck below. The pipe, with a diameter of 500 mm and a free length of approximately 9 m, was derived directly from the architect’s CAD model and manufactured using CNC-milled molds.

The connection of masts arranged in a circular arc to form a playing field boundary was represented here with a decorative crossbar, which made the curvature of the mast line clear and also offered the possibility of concealed installation of spot spotlights. The double-shell beam is made up of pluggable segments.

Lightweight construction on the upper decks and high corrosion resistance can be advantageously combined, especially in pool landscapes with fiber composite materials. The stair tower shown here gives the massive starting platform and the staircase of the water slide system an attractive “packaging”.

A challenge in this project was balancing the design of the lamps with the requirement for easy luminaire replacement inside.

The Palm Tree Lights are designed in such a way that even tropical amounts of rain that fall into the funnel-like crown of the lamp are invisibly drained away through the interior of the lamp.

The two mirror-symmetrical wings are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) and have a span of 19.30 m. Parallel slats were inserted between the wing surfaces. The openings between the leading and trailing edges of the wing were completely covered with translucent GRP material.
By using modern fiber composite materials, around 50% of the weight could be saved compared to an aluminum construction. And all of this with the same strength – after all, the shade roof has to withstand wind speeds of up to 250 km/h.

The 68,500 GT cruise ship AIDAdiva was christened in April 2007, the identical AIDAbella in April 2008. The AIDAluna followed in 2009 and the AIDAbella in 2010.
