The six different sets of GRP road shells differ in their nominal diameter, width and mounting positions, among other things. The sets consist of five to ten segments and are mounted on the steel drums of the tire test stands. For the acoustic test, a tire is positioned from the outside on the running surface of the road shells and the steel drum is rotated together with the road shells. The running surface has a top layer of specially hardened gelcoat, which has the structure of an ISO standard asphalt.
To produce this surface form, Hahlbrock molded an elastic matrix from an asphalt test track and inserted it into the special molding tool for the segment production.
After the GRP production, the raw parts were CNC milled according to the different requirements of the tire manufacturers. In doing so, it was ensured that the transitions between the segments were uniform to prevent any acoustic interference during the sensitive measurements
The project builds on collaborations with Continental and Bridgestone, among others, for whom Hahlbrock had already manufactured road shells. The six sets of road shells now produced all have the same running surface with a structure molded from ISO standard asphalt. This unification by the E.T.R.T.O. is intended to standardize the acoustic test for tire manufacturers.
